My Wildflower Garden
Yesterday afternoon while I was out walking in my garden, and I noticed that the flowers in my wildflower garden were starting to come up. The day before I had been looking, and didn’t see a sign of them! I am always trying to add plants that I don’t have, so last year I bought a bloodwort plant and I was relieved to see the new leaves coming through the soil. I also noticed that some of my trilliums are coming up! Spring wildflowers are very quick to come up , bloom and die back.
I have discovered that you need to be vigilant if you want to see these flowers in bloom! I noticed that one of my trilliums already has a flower bud on it. See my picture! I have been creating a spring wildflower garden for years, even before we had our own place, I had them in planters, talk about hard to keep track of! When we finally got our place I found a spot at the edge of the woods and put a lot of woods dirt and peat moss in it to make the soil acid, like their natural habitat was.
I have found that if you want to grow wildflowers the best idea is to duplicate as close as possible their natural habitat. You can do this by taking trips to the national forests in your area, and hike around all different times of the year, you will see many wildflowers in bloom there, just take good notes about the flowers you see. A word of warning, Do not remove any plant material from the woods, even if there are alot of the plants. You could cause all kinds of damage to the wildflowers, and it would be a shame to destroy such beautiful flowers! Just go ahead and purchase them through reputable flower stores. You will have a much better chance growing wildflowers successfully, and nature can remain unspoiled for future generations to enjoy!
My wildflower garden is one of my special projects, it has taken me years to create, and I still spend time “tweaking” it. I have to move some of the flowers that I originally planted, they are so happy that they try to take over! All things considered, I think I have done a pretty good job of it.
The first spring after we bought our place I was out walking along the edge of the woods, and when I happened to look down I saw a pink lady’s slipper! I guess that’s when I knew I had my “home” at last. Since then I have made other wildflower discoveries on our place, and it gives me such a warm fuzzy feeling to see them. I am a person who loves nature, and enjoys seeing all the wonders that our natural world has to offer, I hope to share with you some of the wonder and enjoyment of my different gardening experiences through my blog. Hope you will come back soon!
