Spring Flower Bulbs

Published by at 12:18 am under General Gardening

In the spring there are beautiful flowers everywhere, but to me some of the
most beautiful ones come from bulbs. They come in all shapes and sizes, and every year they will return in greater numbers.

Spring flower bulbs are such an asset to your garden, because they are so hardy, they don’t cost too much, and when they bloom they are almost magical! Every year I try to add a few more
bulbs to different areas of my gardens

It is hard for me to imagine a spring without my daffodils, they brighten up the
garden so much with their happy yellow trumpets. Nothing says “Hello Spring!”
like a combination of Daffodils and Tulips.

It is hard to beat the color variety of a bed full of spring flowering bulbs, however, the best time to plant spring bulbs is in the fall. During the winter while the rest of the garden plants have
died or gone dormant, the bulbs are sending out roots and starting to grow. Then when spring finally comes and the weather begins to warm they burst forth with their happy blooms to welcome the new gardening season.

The Dutch Hyacinths are one of the most beautiful of the spring flowering
bulbs, my mom had these beauties in her garden, but unfortunately Dutch
Hyacinths are very limited in the areas where it can be a perennial .

In the northern parts of the country where the winters are colder it will bloom for
years, but down south where we are from, they last a very short period, maybe
only a couple of years at most; and then they would have to be replanted.

Tulips are some of the most recognizable spring bulbs, they originated in Holland, and at one time they were considered quite valuable. I know they sure add value to my garden! I have several groups of them in my flower beds.

Crocus are one of the earliest spring flowers to bloom, I have even seen them blooming with snow on the ground! They are white, purple, and yellow. Their season of bloom is very short only a week or so, then they are gone again until next spring.

Daffodils as I said earlier, are my favorite spring time blooms. Every year I anxiously wait for the first blooms to show. Then I begin to believe that winter is finally over!

Spring Wildflower Bulbs

There are also wild flower bulbs that bloom in spring. I like these more than the cultivated spring bulbs; and since I do everything I can to keep my garden as natural as possible, I have many wildflowers there. Because they are native plants, they are practically care free . They grow and spread just like they do
in nature.

Grape hyacinths are small purple flowers that will mutiply every year, I like to dig them up and spread them around, in other areas of my garden they do look like clusters of grapes.

Scillas are another springtime wildflower bulb, most times these are blue, but every now and then you will see white and pink ones.

Snow drops are unusual looking springtime bulbs, they look a little like an upside down propeller. They are white with green tips.

English bluebells are a beautiful shade of blue, they look beautiful when they are scattered underneath tall trees.

These are only a few of the spring flower bulbs, if you want to add a beautiful view to your yard, plant some of these beautiful flowers soon!
