  Greenhouse Gardening

So you  dream of harvesting fresh veggies in the dead of winter? It is possible, all you need is a greenhouse garden.

First you will need to decide on the area where your greenhouse will be. If there is not enough space for putting in a free standing version, then maybe an attaching a greenhouse to your home is a good idea.

Then you will need to measure the amount of light in the area. The greenhouse should have enough sunlight for the plants and shade if it gets too hot. This can be done by making some observations at different times of the day.

Your home may be affected by cold winters or the heat during the summer. Preparations need to be made to install a heater and a ventilation system which would counter these threats and make your garden grow in the greenhouse.

The kind of heater to be used for a greenhouse can be powered by electricity since the area is not that big. Heaters that use oil or gas may only be needed if the structure is very large.

Both systems will need to provide the garden with sufficient oxygen and carbon dioxide that are needed for the plants to grow.

Since plants need sunlight to grow, the type of material used for the windows and ceiling are very important.

Traditionally, glass has done the job, but some studies have shown that too much sunlight passes through and can kill the plants. To avoid this, panels made of film, plastic or Plexiglas are much better.

You should also only use the types of plants that will grow in a greenhouse. You can ask the sales representative at your gardening store or look at the label posted on each plant before buying and bringing it home.

When everything is ready, you have a few options. You can draw the design yourself then go to a supplier who can build it , you can hire a designer to plan and build it for you, or you can purchase a ready-made kit and build it yourself.

Whichever decision you make, it will be a good one, especially when you bring in the first  harvest from your greenhouse garden!
