 Garden Tools

Using the right tool for the job is essential in most of life's undertakings. In the garden it is almost critical. Imagine trying to dig a hole with a garden hoe, it would be nearly impossible, not to mention tiring!

The basic garden tools you need when you begin to garden are a round point shovel, a garden hoe, a garden rake and a hand trowel. There are different prices but quality should be your highest priority. A  poorly constructed garden tool will have to be replaced each season (if you're lucky) while a well made garden tool can last a lifetime.

Round point shovels have a pointed blade and are used to dig holes and move soil around. They have either a long straight handle or a short handle with a "D" shaped grip on the end. The type of handle you choose is mainly a matter of personal preference. The long handled type will give you more leverage, but a "D" handled shovel is more sturdy and is easier for some people to use.

A garden hoe is useful for making furrows for seeds and practically indispensable for weeding between rows of plants. There are different kinds of hoes but your first choice should be one with a square blade that can do several different jobs. The other types of hoes are more specialized.

Everyone should have a heavy duty garden rake. It is great for removing roots and rocks from a new seed bed. You can also use it to rake up grass or leaves, although a leaf rake does a better job of this, if you can only afford one type, it is better to get the most useful garden tool. Quality really counts in choosing a rake, few things are as frustrating as a rake that comes apart in the middle of a job.

A hand trowel is great to have in the spring when you are setting out bedding plants, it is also useful for moving perennials and other plants that have sprouted in the wrong place and need to be moved to another area.

These are the most basic garden tools to have to begin gardening . There are more specialized tools you can get later on, but it is best to keep it simple at first. Remember to buy well made quality tools and your gardening experiences will be much more enjoyable.
