Planting Fruit Trees

Where to plant your fruit tree

When planting fruit trees in the home garden, choosing the right place is crucial . Fruit trees can be grown in a wide variety of soils, however good drainage is most important. Apples and other fruit trees do not tolerate damp soils. If the fruit tree is planted in wet soil, it will not grow well and will often die in a few years. Well-drained soils allow for good root formation.

Because of space restrictions, planting sites are often limited in a home garden. Most apple and cherry trees need to be spaced  20' apart others can be planted closer.Choose an area that receives full sun, at least 6 to 8 hours a day and has good air circulation. Avoid areas that are shaded by large trees or buildings.

When to plant your fruit tree

Some fruit trees are "self-fruitful" which means they do not need another tree for pollination.Other fruit trees like apples will usually need another variety of apple tree nearby to produce fruit. The best times of year to plant your fruit tree is in the spring or fall, do not plant in the heat of summer.Water in well and keep from drying out for the first year.If you decide to mulch, remember not to get the mulch against the trunk of the tree. This can cause problems from insects and or disease.

How to plant your fruit tree

When planting fruit trees, position the graft union  2 to 3 inches above the ground for dwarf fruit trees and semi-dwarf fruit trees.  If the graft union is planted below ground level, the trunk area above the graft  may root, which will cause your "dwarf" to become a "standard". Winter injury may occur if more than 2 to 3 inches of the area below the graft union is exposed. Standard-sized fruit trees may be planted with the graft union 1 to 2 inches below the ground since the rootstock doesn't possess dwarfing characteristics. Planting fruit trees too deeply can cause trouble. It is also best to protect the lower 18" to24" of the trunk during the first couple of winters..

It seems like alot of trouble, but with a little forethought and care your fruit tree will repay your efforts for years to come!
